For me, the role of an artist is similar to that of a tourist. I travel to places and through life, marveling in the delight of various motifs that manifest in visual cultures. In urban settings, we are often bombarded by messages that entice consumption and promote shared social ideals. In “natural” landscapes, such as mountainous regions and gardens, my mind can rest. Everywhere, I find things familiar, foreign and a combination of the two. My resulting artwork is a unique interpretation of these phenomena. For this reason, it is heavily process based. It is an act of personal discovery. Gender, ornamentation and display are major themes in my work. These themes are melded into abstract, organic shapes and natural landscapes. It is my hope that my work oscillates between visually appealing, benign decorations, and saturated, glitzy, over the top flamboyance. |
